Why Your State Matters More Than the National Average

From my experience:Most of the "solar costs $X and pays back in Y years" numbers you see online are national averages, and national averages describe almost nobody. The first question I ask anyone is where they live, because that single fact moves the math more than which panel brand they pick.

There is no single answer to "is solar worth it?" because the United States does not have one solar market. It has fifty of them. Your state determines:

  • Net metering rules - whether you get full retail credit for exported power, a reduced export rate, or almost nothing
  • State incentives - tax credits, rebates, and performance payments that stack on top of federal policy
  • SREC markets - a handful of states let you sell renewable energy certificates for ongoing income
  • Electricity rates - the higher your rate, the more every kWh you generate is worth
  • Permitting and interconnection - how long it takes to actually turn the system on
Same System, Different States
An identical system produces meaningfully different financial results depending on where it is installed, because savings depend on your local electricity rate and what your utility pays for exported power — not just on how much sun you get. Sunny states with cheap power can pay back slower than cloudier states with expensive power.

What Actually Changes State to State

Net Metering

This is usually the single biggest variable. Some states still require utilities to credit exported solar at the full retail rate, which is the best case for a homeowner. Others have moved to net billing or an export rate well below retail, which reduces the value of power you send back and makes battery storage more attractive. A few have no statewide requirement at all, leaving it entirely to the utility.

State Incentives

These stack on top of federal policy and range from meaningful to nonexistent. Some states offer a percentage-based income tax credit, others offer upfront rebates, performance-based payments per kWh generated, property tax exemptions so your system does not raise your tax bill, or sales tax exemptions on the equipment itself.

SRECs

In a small group of states, your system generates a tradable certificate for each megawatt-hour it produces, and you can sell those certificates for ongoing income. Where SREC markets exist and prices are strong, they can be worth thousands over the life of a system. Prices fluctuate with the market, so treat any projection as an estimate rather than a guarantee.

Electricity Rates

Solar saves you money by offsetting power you would otherwise buy. That makes your local electricity rate a direct multiplier on your savings. This is why states with modest sunshine but expensive electricity often deliver better returns than sunny states with cheap power.
